abbo Posted May 17, 2011 Share Hi Guys Having my first go at changing tubbies.I have researched abit about the process so hope all goes ok. My question is, how much glue do i need to apply to the tyres and rim? Will be using the continental 25g tubes. The rims will have a little glue from the removed tyres but the tyres going on will be brand new. Im just looking for a bit of a guide...ie 1/2 tube 3/4 tube or full tube per tyre. Oh pls pls dont say to use the tape instead as I am sitting in Bahrain and have NO way of getting my hands on any in time. Thanks in advance for the help.Abbo
Bike Mob Posted May 17, 2011 Share if there is already some glue on the rims you just need one layer on there. think 1.4 of a tube between both rims. then two layers on each tire with some dry time in between. on application of the second layer you should mount immediately and true the tire on the rim. You should have some glue left over - maybe 1/4 tube after both tires.
Bike Mob Posted May 17, 2011 Share go light on the 1st tire layer as it just soaks in and seals the canvas, then the second layup is more important.
LeTurbo Posted May 17, 2011 Share Then, I see from a previous thread, it needs 24 hours to dry. eish.
Bike Mob Posted May 17, 2011 Share I have ridden mine with under 12 hours dry time...ie overnight without issues.
LeTurbo Posted May 17, 2011 Share Good grief! I did ... these tubbies are as much a pain in the bum as riding a roadbike on singletrack without the saddle. I just bought an old set of Shamals and now I'm wondering if I should have.
abbo Posted May 17, 2011 Share thanks for the replies guys.Yeah this is a bit of glue still on the rims, so should not need to over do it. I just have this aweful image of the tyres coming off throught a corner or turn!
desmondalie Posted May 18, 2011 Share Just my 2c. If the tubbie is new, mount it on the wheel dry and inflate it to about 6 or 7 bar. Leave it on for a couple of hours or overnight. This stretches it a bit and will make the mounting easier after you put the glue on.
