I am also in the same boat as the OP. I am, however, not too worried about weight loss. That is not my primary objective. I do have 2 questions though. How do you guys feel about pasta dishes the night before. Does that not assist with your energy intake and therefore helping with the longer rides? And what is your feeling Muesli/Oats in the morning, for a more sustained longer energy release? Any comments will be welcome.

Thanks in advance

AK

Do yourself a favour and skip the 'pasta party', the night before- no benefit to this whatsoever. If its just a training ride: eat as normal. If its a really tough ride, or a race: rather slightly increase your good carb intake ie. bananas, melon, potato, sweet potato and some dried fruit. Make sure your evening meal contains healthy fats and good protein. Remember, your glycogen stores can only be so full. If you've done nothing excessive the day before, then your glycogen stores will only be slightly depleted, a huge bowl of 'empty' carbs (pasta) isn't going to do anything for you other then probably make you put on weight as you'll probably be in a caloric excess for the day.

Muesli/oats in the morning, isn't the best option either, as it takes too long to digest. What hasn't digested by the time you start your ride, will just sit there in your gut and soak up fluids, likely leaving you feeling a little bloated.

I know that is what I have to do as well. Baby steps. I already do not drink fizzy drinks anymore. Now to further reduce the sugar intake!

Thanks for the reply.

Hey Panini,

Just seen this thread and wanted to let you know about a new product for the SA market that is coming into stores now (already in a few stores in Cape Town)

The product name is High5, we do a full range of sports nutrition but we have a new product within the range, its a Low Cal electrolyte sports drink called ZERO. Researchers have found that simply drinking ZERO instead of a normal carbohydrate sport drink 22 participants burned on average 41% more fat during exercise. Independently tested; Faculty of Biomedical and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow.

More deatils about ZERO and HIGH5 here: http://www.cyclespro.co.za/zero.html

Yes i agree there are loads of products out there and each person will find different results.

Maybe you want to try out ZERO, RRP for a 20 tablet tube is R75 (that makes 20x500ml bottles) thats R3,75 a drink.

If you want to try it let me know.

Zero is a great product. I've been buying it from ChainReaction for the past 9 months or so. Generally alternate it with 32Gi, although I prefer Zero. Glad to see its available here now.

Go Google "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" by Dr. Robert Lustig. it is a 1.5 hour video, watch it and then decide whether you want anything in your body but real food and natural sugar. I'm staying off anything resembling fructose because of it!

EDIT: From http://www.baumancollege.org/forum/index.php?topic=8364.0

"
It takes about an hour to view all 9 parts. In case you're not sure if you're up to that, here are some of the points he makes convincingly: high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and sucrose (table sugar) are equally destructive; they both contain fructose which can only be metabolized by the liver, poisoning it and making it insulin resistant. This insulin resistance in the liver causes chronically raised insulin which makes us feel badly and store fat. It stimulates our appetite and interferes with leptin signaling to the brain so we eat more. In fact, it leads to all the manifestations of Metabolic Syndrome, including inflammation, hypertension, 'bad' cholesterol, obesity, fatty liver, and leptin resistance [note: this doesn't take into account GMO corn used in HFCS, or mercury found in it].

In nature, fructose is always found with lots of fiber and other essential nutrients. Processed foods have the fiber removed - fiber makes foods more difficult to eat, cook, transport, store, and profit from. Although fructose is a chronic hepatotoxin (it damages the liver - fructose is "ethanol without the buzz"), the FDA only regulates acute toxins and won't touch this, so it's up to us. The takeaway message is: don't drink or eat fructose without the fiber - in other words, sodas, sweetened drinks, fruit juices, and most processed foods. If you want to know more, and the science behind it, watch the video!"

I would also recommend watching this video - it's an eye opener and makes huge sense. One thing though - fructose is fine for consumption by athletes during strenuous activity. Exercise influences the metabolism and allows the body to process the fructose beneficially. The big no-no is to consume energy drinks off the bike.
