Scicon Aero Comfort Plus

Go Multi tested the Aero Comfort on four flights undertaken in March 2011: DBN-JHB, JHB to Abu Dhabi for the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon and the return flights. Observations were:

  • A bike bag rather than a bike box results in a lighter baggage item (not to say top-end bags can't be light). Our BMC SSX road bike plus helmet plus tri-bar and wheels weighed in at 15.4kg, including the bag.
  • Anecdotally, airline crew (Etidhad from JHB-AD and SAA domestically) seem to handle soft bike bags more gently than hard boxes. On arrival in Durban at the end, the bag was not scuffed in anyway, although the left brake had been slightly mis-aligned inwards, probably from a sudden jolt against something. There was no surface damage to the Campagnolo Centaur brake lever or hood.
  • The bag was highly manoeuvrable on its four wheels when pushed from the handlebar side of the bike. Pulling the clip-belt was not a good idea - the bike starts swerving like a drunk driver
  • Loading the bike took around 10 minutes at leisurely pace. The wheels come off and the frame attaches onto a rigid metal frame that forms the base of the bag, with quick-release skewers (supplied and they're good quality).

Based on the four flights, the text from the company'spress release rings true:

The Aero Comfort is one of the best ways to transport your precious bike, especially if you're flying. The Aero Comfort is cleverly designed to follow the form of the bike frame to save space and you only have to remove the wheels. The 7.7kg soft case comes with a Anti-shock Bike Frame to protect all critical parts from shocks, vibrations and impacts. Manufactured from Nylon 840 with a high density foam inner padding (with individual padded zip-locked wheel compartments), the bag has been designed to withstand tears and abrasions. There are removable double anti-shock pads for the handlebars aswell. The Aero Comfort also features an adjustable holding strap, ergonomic handle for easy lifting and steering and an inner zip-locked pocket for tools. Designed to carry bicycles up to size 65.

Locally,Team Bonitas Medscheme are using this bag for the 2011 season.

Do you perhaps have a price on a similar styled hard case? I'm looking for 2 if the price is right.

If the SciCon Aerotech Evolution Hard Bag was discounted like some of the other products advertised on this side (up to 50% off), I'd have take two bags :(

Nice looking bag nonetheless!
