IMHO you can have strength without power. Strength is the ability to do hard work for a very short time. Power is doing hard work for a much longer time. Weightlifting increases strength. Doing it with lighter weights and more reps develops power. In cycling you need power especially during those long uphills. This is where you loose the most time.

 

So in conclusion the following equation: power = strength + endurance

On a related matter. I find it much easier to sustain a high power (i.e. my FTP and higher) on a steep hill than on the flats. Are all cyclists basically just better at transmitting power when there is a constant resistatnce, or am I just bad at riding on flat roads?

 

Does it then matter whether you base your FTP on a flat TT or a hilly TT?

There is much misunderstanding in this area - all I ask is that you read and consider the article I posted.

 

You will see that even the hardest sprint uses only around 50-60% of your maximum force - in other words, even when sprinting, strenght is not the limiter and much less so when riding under other circumstances.
