I have just put a 2*10 crank on my otherwise 3*10 drivetrain, I simply adjusted the limit screws on the existing FD so that I now effectively have only one shift possible on my 3 'shift' front shifter.

It isn't 100% perfect when you look at it for different reasons (2*10 crank vs a 3*9 with big blade removed) but it works a treat!

Like OX says no need to change the chain length unless it worries you!

But then again the microwave generation would rather just go and buy stuff and do it .... be daring and do some testing, gives great satisfaction when it works!

Yep being in the office is definately not cool, but its the only way to free up time for the bike durin the week, not much of a weekend rider.

Thanks for the comparison BigBen, its always nice to hear of someone doing the sme sort of thing and it working. I can't wait to try it out!

On slightly different tack, when i decide to replace my middle and inner chainrings i want to change to a 24T and 34T setup. do you know which rings are compatible with shimano? or do shimano do differently sized chainrings?
