Sorry for hijacking your thread, I'm also in the market for a similar priced 29er.

Have you considered the Trek X -Cal?

SRAM X7 30-speed drivetrain

RockShox Reba RL w/Motion Control lockout

Avid Elixir 1 hydraulic disc brakes

Bontrager 29-1 Expert tires

Does anybody have some comments on this bike?

Had a look at the trek...very nice bike...but the price at my lbs is a little more then the momsen and the zaskar and the components are pretty much the same... the fork, the wheels and to be honest the " look " of the momsen sold it for me...

I can get either the GT Zaskar Elite or the Trek X Cal at prettty good price. The Zaskar I can get with tubeless coversion and some other odds and ends for R12000, and the Trek X cal I can get woth tubeless conversionn for R11800. Havent really looked at the Momsen before but have looked at the Merida TFS900 - no stock of this available.

As far as I know the trek has a better fork than the GT, but dont really know the difference between the rest. The GT looks better.

Tough choice....

I have also been spending the last few weeks looking at bikes in this price range and spec level. With the addition of the Giant XTC1.

I like the look of the giant

I like the rims and fork option on the momsen

I'm partial to the gt's price, but the rims are heavy.

Then there is the moral dilema... The gt and giant models are stocked by my prefered LBS, whom have provided excelent service to me thus far, and

I would prefer to support them with the sale.

On the other hand, there is also the "support local" bit with buying the momsen.

Buying a bike shouldn't be based on morals, I mean hardly anyone has them anymore, but I'm thinking

If I keep my LBS happy, they will keep me happy...

I'm a recreational rider, so any of the bikes would do fine, but one still wants to look at the bike and say "yes, this was the bike I wanted"...

Decisions, decisions...
