He said' date=' "Eskom was right. We were wrong". Now this is a jolly decent thing for him to say, but it is wrong on two counts. First, Mbeki suggests that it was rather difficult to tell whether we needed new power stations.

It wasn't. It was blindingly obvious. Second, he is too chivalrous in taking all the blame upon his government; half must fall on Eskom.[/quote']

The story I've heard from engineers working at Eskom and in Engineering News etc. is that about 10 years ago Eskom produced a study document that predicted this growth and the resulting power demands. In the document they recommended the immediate construction of additional power stations.

The government wanted to attract foreign investment into our power industry and so for this and a few other reasons, denied Eskom permission to build more stations. Our low power prices meant that foreign investors did not see a favourable potential return on investment for local power plants and so none of them proposed to build any. Hence our current problems and this rather belated apology.

The thing that realy gets to me is that Eskom wants to jack prices up by 18 % due to the massive incease in demande that has resulted by rapid growth and development.

Surely if there has been massive growth and development there are many many more people buying power from Eskom - thus they should have plenty cash to go around.

Its like coca cola increasing their prices as more people are drinking coke - B.S

Eskom prices are way under international costs and have been depressed for some time, had they increased in line with real costs we would be paying far more than the 18% wanted. Even if they do get 18% now expect another jump next year.
