Hardly used Monterey Silverback 18 Speed racing bike.

 

52cm frame.

Carbon forks and seat upright.

 

Was stolen in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town during a Gumtree "deal" gone wrong

 

This white male about 1.6m tall and in his twenties or early thirties drives a white Opal with black tinted windows.

 

Asking the people in the bicycle circles to look-out for this.

When was this stolen. I bought the exact same bike, second hand in November last year. Hope it was'nt stolen then.

How did the gumtree deal go wrong?

 

Maybe let us all know what went down so that hopefully it saves a fellow hubber from the same scenario.

It was stolen today Mike.

 

Classic trick, separate the buyer from the goods and bugger off. We loaded the bike into his car and took off "to have it looked at" by Chris Willemse Cycles, being a really hot day he suggested a drink and after parting with what he said was his house keys I went in to get a coke... ja well no fine.

 

We've given the keys to the cops, giving them to me obviously wasn't part of his plan and hopefully he'll pay for his mistake. I also noticed while he was looking at the bike that his hands were shaking, obviously not a seasoned criminal so we'll wait for his next mistake... or for our great Cape Town taxi service to get hold of him by some (or no) mistake of their own.

 

I guess one can only learn to be very alert and be suborn as a mule. Sadly social etiquette should have nothing to do with what is essentially business.

Ag if he's got a bit of luck the law will pick him up eventually, otherwise we'll catch him for a second half.
