National Junior Track Squad Announced

The National Junior Track Squad has been selected in the wake of CyclingSA's highly successful Track Training Camp held in December 2011 in Cape Town.

 

The exercise proved successful in identifying talented young Track Cycling athletes, who will now be automatically included in the Track Training Camps during the course of 2012.

 

The first camp kicks off at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Newlands, Cape Town, on Thursday the 23rd February until lunch time Sunday the 26th February, where after there will be a skills camp until Tuesday the 28th February. Most Track endurance riders will then travel to Nelspruit for the SA Road Championships, where the selectors will be watching them closely.

 

The second camp for 2012 will be hosted at the Velodrome in Cape Town from Sunday the 1st April until Saturday the 7th April, and should be a perfect foundation for the SA Track Championships being staged from 26th to 30th April.

On conclusion of the SA Track Championships, the track selectors will select a reduced squad for the Junior World Track Championships, which will be held in Invercargill, New Zealand.

 

The third and final camp prior to departure for the Junior World Championships will be held from Sunday the 1st July until Saturday the 14th July.

 

A new TID (Talent Identification) squad for 2013 will be chosen at an open training camp, which will once again be held in December, the proposed dates being the 9th - 16th December 2012.

The Track Commission and its selectors extend their congratulations to those selected into the squad.

 

According to CyclingSA's National Director Transformation & Development Roger Bouton, tremendous potential was found in many attendees of the December Training Camp, yet they might be slightly younger and therefore less developed than some of the cyclists that have been selected.

 

"Some of the youngsters from the outlying and rural areas really embraced the exercise with vigour, and just need a little more experience to step up their game in this discipline of cycling to be eligible for the squad system," said Roger.

 

The selectors are watching the cyclists closely and any candidate whom is capable of meeting a set selection time may become eligible.

 

In line with the Talent Identification program, the second camp, which will be facilitated from Sunday the 1st April until Saturday the 7th April, at Bellville, will be open to 2nd year under-16 cyclists, as well as 1st year juniors whom would like to improve their skills.

 

Young cyclists are encouraged to work towards the underlying qualifying times:

• Endurance qualifying is a flying 1 000 meters in under 1.12.00
  

• Sprint qualifying is a flying 100 meters in under 6 seconds.
