Chain dropping on descents

I've been told you can avoid this by shifting up the casette on the descent - it prevents the derailleur from flexing and the chain from bouncing around whilst you're free wheeling over the bumps.

I tried this the other day and it worked a charm, it was driving me nuts.

U sure the chain is not too long?

How do you know the exact length your chain needs to be? I've always taken for granted that it was correct when I bought it, but I have since changed derailleurs, will this effect chain length as well?

When you put the chain on do it with the bike in largest cog front and back. It should just fit. You can even shorten it more, but then the you start losing gears (often combo's that you don't use).
