The 15th anniversary of the KIA Walkerville Classic, Gauteng’s biggest andfavourite winter mountain-bike event, will be an occasion to remember.

The Classic, even though it is held in the middle of the winter – July 15 this year– attracts more than 1 500 riders annually. This speaks volumes for thestandard of the organisation and the route.

To commemorate the special occasion of the event’s 15th staging, presentingsponsor ASG have put up 25 Rudy Project ZUMA helmets, valued at R1300 each, forthe first 25 riders who enter on-line.

ASG is proud tohave KIA Motors as the title sponsor for the Walkerville Classic from 2012.

Walkerville is one of 5 MTB events making up the KIA MTB Series for 2012/2013. “Kia Motors'involvement in sport stems from being the official vehicle supplier to FIFA,the official partner of the Euro 2012 and the major sponsor of the AustralianOpen. Locally Kia Motors South Africa is looking to make a difference in thehugely popular cycling scene with mountain biking as it's focus. Kia, as thetitle sponsor is proud to be working with ASG to bring you a series ofmemorable and exciting races. Our aim is to raise the overall experience forevery rider within our race series and give them a sense of what the brand andour cars are all about. I look forward to seeing you on the trails.” Says DavidSieff, National Marketing Manager of KIA Motors.

On-line entries for the Walkerville Classic have moved to www.asgevents.co.za.

If you have entered the Walkerville Classic before your details have been loadedonto the new on-line entry site. You will just be required once off to create anew username and password on the new system.

Known widely as Gauteng’s coldest mountain-bike event, the Classic also is alsorenowned for its smooth, flowing single-track sections.

There are, however, real challenges on the route, which offers a wonderful variety ofriding terrain. As a result, the race is a true test for any mountain biker –and it offers great rewards.

Ken Davies, one of the founding fathers of mountain biking in South Africa, remainsin charge of route design and control. He still loves riding his bike and, atthe “entry-level” age of 68, does so better than most.

Ken has retained the 2011 route, which means many riders are in for an extra treat. Those who participated last year can try to improve on their 2011 times.

The 60km riders will start from 8:30 and those who take on the 40km event will getunder way from 09:30.

All finishers receive a special commemorative 15th anniversary medal.

Distinctive features on the route:

At the 10km mark: The climb to the top of Platberg, which, at almost 2 000 metresabove sea level, provides magnificent views of the whole Witwatersrand.

At the 30km mark: Great single-track riding through the Eikenhof plots

At the 35km mark: Technical, tough 1.5km climb following the Eikenhof single-tracksection
