Hey fellow Hubbers,

A couple of friends and I have decided to give the DC some thought...

For those who did it last year, apart from the training etc, what are the costs of doing the race? Obviously this will differ from group to group because some of us may include beers for finishing in our budget :P

What we want to know is entry fee, petrol for the support car and whatever other costs that one would deem necessary for the event. Actually, any input regarding preparation will be much appreciated.

Last year - entry R300 p/person or R3,600 per team; support car was sponsored (by our team sponsor - Williams Bike shop), petrol to the event +- R400 (from Cpt); accomodation R1,500 for two nights... don't forget all the LSD rides with your team mates.

And Enjoy :)

We live 400km from Swellendam. The cost for our team was about R11000. This includes fuel for 2 cars to the venue (800km x2) and one support car (205Km). 2 nights accommodation and a braai the Saturday night and entry fee. But it is less than a R1000/ person for the weekend. The other meals you had to supply yourself.

DC Tips:

- Accommodation is scarce in Swellendam that weekend (and expensive). You will have to stay out of Town for this one. Phone around for a bulk booking that can accommodate 12 riders + 2 support crew

- Get your cycling kit made early. Get quotes from Velotex, Howzit, Anatomic etc. Remember to get sizing right. Some companies have samples that can be used for sizing.

- Don't bother with getting cycling shorts made in team colours. Simply get everyone to ride with black shorts

- Diarise training rides and make it compulsory that the everyone in the team attend at least 2 of the minimum of 4 long rides.

- Enter for the One Tonner or similar distance event and ride it as a team. The One tonner is usually about one month before the DC. Make sure everyone has their kit by then and that you have done at least 3 of your 4 long rides by then.

- Get team members to pay for accommodation, entry, petrol cost, kit and other team expenses in advance. If they bail on you, they will have to find a suitable replacement and recover their cost themselves.

- Line up a reserve rider just in case.

- Make sure everyone is on the same page, ie if you decide to be a 8 hour DC team with all 12 members finishing, stick to it.
