pistonpomp Posted July 3, 2012 Share Went for a 1h45 relaxed on open gravel roads ride on Sunday after 4 months of no cycling and did a 1h30 yesterday on a mix of mild jeeptrack and gravel roads. Last night the muscle above my left ankle (achilles I think?) is sore and a little swollen. Anyone got a idea what this is? I presume being out of the saddle for too long and then overdoeing it... seven Posted July 4, 2012 Share Sounds like the achilles tendon is a bit inflamed. Is probably a 'normal' response to laying off and then overdoing it.
Robodog Posted July 4, 2012 Share Do you do any stretching after your rides?
pistonpomp Posted July 4, 2012 Share Do you do any stretching after your rides? Apart from playing with my moerse brak, not really. But ja, I think I should consider it because I can't actually ride now which is frustrating.
Robodog Posted July 4, 2012 Share After the inflammation goes down and you can ride again.... Try a bit of light stretching when the muscles and tendons etc are warm and supple after a ride or even a longish walk. To stretch the tendon in the ankle it is similar to the calf stretch (standing on a step or leaning against a wall). In the calf stretch your leg is straight but to activate the tendon stretch bend the knee and then push the heel down.
pistonpomp Posted July 4, 2012 Share Thanx, will do that!
rattlesnake Posted July 6, 2012 Share See a physio and DON'T try train through the pain! I did and I developed a tear in the tendon. Left me off the bike for 6 weeks. And it's still not 100%. See to it now before it becomes chronic
