On 7 July 2012 I wrote off the front wheel of my 29er when I reversed into the root of a tree with the bike on its rack. My son and I had travelled from Cape Town to do the Knysna 50km MTB race. Desperate to ride, I went to Knysna Cycle Works and asked them to sell or rent me a wheel. To my shock, disbelief and despite what seems to be the biggest cycle shop in Knysna, I was told that they did not have any wheel to rent or sell, but that I could buy a set of 29er wheels for R10 000,00! This plainly was nothing more than an attempt to exploit and make a profit out of my misfortune. And this when the website of Knysna Cycle Works says, “Our committed team strives to keep you in the saddle”! I walked out of the shop in disgust.

But there is a happy end to this story. About 50m down the road I went to Ultimate Cycling and received the ultimate service. Five minutes before the race started, their mechanic, Morné, lent me a used wheel, replaced the rotor, fitted a tube and sent me on my way, saying that payment could be sorted out after the race. This is the character the cycling fraternity should display. Well done Ultimate Cycling for ensuring a great ride!
