Online pre entries for the 2012 South African Elite Mountain Bike Marathon Championships in Wellington in the Western Cape close next week on Tuesday 21st August at midnight.

The prestigious one-off championship race, which will determine who gets to don the coveted national jersey in the Elite Men and Elite Women’s categories, takes place in the heart of the Boland on Saturday 25th August 2012.

This year, the SA Elite MTB Marathon Championship is incorporated into the popular MTN National MTB Series # 6 (Wellington), Driven by Nissan, where thousands of mountain bikers are expected to make their annual pilgrimage.

All the regular race distances that riders have become accustomed to when participating in the MTN National MTB Series will still be on offer over the course of the weekend for those participants who are contesting their series’ points.

However, the main attraction is set to be the SA Elite Marathon Championship races, with South Africa’s top endurance mountain bikers vying for the esteemed national title.

Elite men (aged 19 and up) will race the 103-kilometre Ultra Marathon distance with an ascent of 2800m, taking place on farm roads and jeep tracks heading away from Diemersfontein, through the vineyards and farms of Wellington, against the scenic backdrop of the Bainskloof Pass road, heading towards Groenberg Mountain. Elite Women (aged 19 and up) will be required to tackle the 75km marathon route for championship status, with an ascent of 1850m during their race.

The SA MTB Marathon Champs is also the fourth and final marathon selection event for 2012 for the national team that will be competing in Ornans, France in October. The 2012 Mountain Biking Selection Criteria document can be found here.
