Hi everyone I'm new to the cycling thing and want to get started I have a budget of R20 000 and I want to buybikes for me and my girlfriend, I already saw the bike that I'm getting for her it's a Specialized jet expert 2012 model.. What do you think?

I'm looking at the Merida big nine 500 for myself or the Scott scale 960 2013 models

Please advise me if its a good buy or not, or if you have any other suggestions?

Hey man,

Biggest thing is to give a bit more information and read the threads on thehub.... there are a whole host of bikes in your price range if you have R20k per bike, still plenty if you have R10k per bike.

A bit of research will need to be done on your part about 26,29 or 27.5 (650b) wheel size... full suspension or a hard tail.

What and where are you looking at riding, how often, how fit are you and what is your end goal?? To mission along the dam watching the ducks or to be bombing down rocky downhills? Wanting to do stage race cross country riding? 20-30km or 70-90km??

All very important questions you will need to look at before pulling the trigger and spend your hard earned money!

Cheers

Ok cool im looking at riding a bit more than just a here and there i want to start doing somefun runs but also more experienced stuff aswell. Im not as fit as i use to be but im stil in good shape, the big reason is that i get shins when i run! And i hate a gym! I am a swimmer so still want tobe outdoors!! Im curently looking at a scott spark team 29er for myself! And for my girlfriend a specialized jet expert?? Will these bikes be sufficient !?

Both bike's are good brands, i see you narrowed your choice down to the Scott, looking at the specs it looks a better choice. Your g/f bike is women's specific, there is some debate as to whether this is ideal or not so perhaps let her get a feel for it first.
