The general consensus was that the Etape this year would be 2 stages like last year with one being Ventoux and the other the awesome stage 18 Gap-l'Alpe d'Huez 168km – main climbs Col de Manse, Col d'Ornon, Alpe d'Huez 1, Col de Sarenne, Alpe d'Huez 2 (finish)

The route was announced today and is 1 stage with a relatively unknown set of hills to get up. Anyone think they missed a trick here?

Shame as I was sizing it up as an alternative, cheaper, midlife crisis to the Epic.

The route of the Etape du Tour 2013 is exceptionally a loop, allowing a unique place for the village, the start and the finish.

The start will be at the heart of Annecy, there will be a few miles longer than the route of the Tour de France.

Before validation during winter by the authorities, here are some things that will allow you to trace the route on a map:

Albertville (D1508) – St-Jorioz – La Chapelle St Maurice – Bellecombe en Bauges – Le Chatelard – Aillon le Vieux – Thoiry – St Jean d’Arvey – La Féclaz – Trévignin – St Offenge Dessus – Pont de l’Abîme – Gruffy – Quintal – Montée du Semnoz

Côte de Puget (5,4 km à 5,8%)

Col de Leschaux (3,6 km à 6,2%)

Côte de Aillons-le-Vieux (6 km à 4%)

Col des Prés (3,5 km à 6,5%)

Col du Mont-Revard (16 km à 5,4%)

Montée finale du Semnoz (11 km à 8,3%)

Will be a tough one but not a 'classic' as everyone was expecting especially for the 100 year anniversary and a stage that features D'Huez twice in a day and Ventoux.

Weird choice.
