If you want to just try things out, I'd say buy a used bike on the hub and see if you enjoy it first. There was a carbon 26" Raleigh with good spec going for R6k a little while ago. I think you'll struggle to find a complete 29er on theHub in that price bracket. Having said that, I saw a brand new GT Karakoram 2.0 on sale for R5,5k just the other day. This is a 29" bike and, by all accounts, a very decent and fun-to-ride frame. GT is a solid brand, and the spec on that bike is enough to keep you going (If I remember correctly, it even had a RockShox XC fork - a big boon over the Suntour's normally found in this price range). The resale value of a tried-and-trusted brand like GT might be slightly better than a brand like Titan (which can offer good value-for-money on the initial purchase), especially being a 29er. The Karakoram 3.0 (cheaper than the 2.0) seems to have very similar spec to the Titan you provided a link to, but still has the "advantage" of 29 inch wheels. Nothing wrong with a second hand giant xtc with full xt components. I would however check that the second hand bike's components are not too old, if they are 10 speed then you are in the pound seats. Also buy your bike with a good frame, fork and wheels. Rest can be swopped and upgraded without too much faf. Just my 2c's.
