is there a term for a running start mtb race?

is there a name for the style of starting an event (I've only seen at 24 hour events) where you run to your bikes instead of starting on them...

 

also, at the VG 24 hour last year, the timing area had to be walked. is this a norm in 24 hour lap races?

Yes, it's called a Le Mans start and always done at 24 hour races.

The misty valley 24 hour last month had a mounted start which was a bit unusual. they've just planned another for november.

 

most 24 hours also have a compulsory walk through the timing block?

I would imagine those are races that use manual timing. If chipped, you wouldn't need to dismount.

True though Southern skies, omni motion and misty valley were all manual timing. Only omni had compulsory walk throughs
