Headset movement

The headset on my wife's Merida Big Nine TFS 500 (RS Rebar fork) has a slight (maybe a mm) play for and aft. No up/down/sideways play.

 

It's as if there's room in the headset to allow forward and backwards play.

 

I tried checking whether it was a spacer, but my knowledge of these things is minimal.

 

The bike's 9 months old and has seen maybe 1000km riding so wear and tear would suprise me.

 

Is this something to take in or a DIY jobbie ( I don't have headset pullers etc).

Hi Nico. I would start by loosening the Stem bolts and just tightening the topcap bolt and then the stem again. In many cases it might just be that the headset is just a bit loose.

While you do what is suggested above, just slide the fork downward a bit and check if the bearings are still greased. Also make sure that when you tighten the stem bolts they are torqued to the correct torque.
