Event Name: Caltex Thomas River MTB
When: 2 November 2013
Where: Thomas River, Eastern Cape
Category: MTB

I'm posting on John's behalf,

Hi Everyone,

Please put a ring around the 2nd of November because that's the date for the Caltex Thomas River and we are working hard to make it the best ever.

The route follows more or less the same as last year but we've planned some very interesting deviations to add some more spice to the ride. While we are praying for good rains to break the crippling drought we don't really need the mudbath we had last year!!!!

We have had some horrible veld fires and actually lost a couple of buildings in the village but not enough to affect the running of the race so it's not only still the best but also the best value for money race in South Africa.

We have shortened the 10km funride and taken "Heartbreak Hill" out of the equation and made it much more kid friendly.

In addition to the meat prizes we will have some fantastic novelty and lucky draw prizes and Cycle Torque will once again have a Mountain Bike to be won.

I am attaching an entry form which you can fill in and e-mail back to Jo-Anne on thomasriver-entries@net4u.co.za. Also the info page which has some of our major co-sponsors logo's on so please support them we could not run the race without them!

Looking forward to seeing you all at Thomas River on the 2nd.

Cheers,

John

Hi Everyone,

Only 2 weeks to go and we are gearing up for the best ever Thomas River!

The response has been fantastic especially for accommodation. Even our dormitory and camping accommodation at the Farmer's hall @ R20 pp is filling up rapidly. Very few levelish sites and you need to stoke the donkey for hot water. We are asking hall people to use the 5 showers & 6 toilets there and not to use the already overtaxed ablutions at the village. Please book with me for the remaining available spaces.

Wondering which race to ride? I;ve been allowed to ride for my 75th birthday and was aiming at the very do-able 40 k but there has been so much admin to do that training has gone out the window so see you on the 22!!

65km Race Most of the climbing is in the first 22k followed by a 5km rest before hitting the last steep climb to the forestry. After that, without that killer climb near the end, it is now a very enjoyable ride home with some nice technical stuff. A do-able but challenging 1358m total climb.

40km Race Like all our rides this year we start off with a long, steady climb to the highest point of the day followed by a “wheeee!” downhill before climbing up to the forestry then that enjoyable ride home with some nice technical stuff. Total climb is 882m.

22km Race Follows the same route as the 40 except for that pull up to the top of the Amatola’s and back. The ideal ride if your fitness is a bit down (or you are busy building it up)! The 499m total climb will test but not punish you.

10km Race We have fitted a bit of everything into this race climbs, downhills, single tracking and water crossings. A marathon course in miniature! The 174m total climb means you will enjoy every kilo!

Chocolate Race There has long been a need for something between the “skop skooters” and the junior mountain bikers so this year you have it in a longer 5km Chocolate race. Completely safe but a good challenge for our budding mountain bikers. Total climb is a very do-able 98m!

Then there are the riders in our most important race: those who say “Daddy when are we going to Thomas River?” which overrides ‘wifey dear’s’ comment of “Not another bike race” and next thing you know she is leaving yours truly huffing and panting in her dust!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The cost is R20 for both distances and you can choose at registration.

The response from both our sponsors, led of course by Caltex, and our riders means we are going to have a really bumper race with lots of really quality prizes including a Mountain bike from Cycle Torque! And 2 chances to win alarm installations worth R3000 each. (Make sure you get an entry card to the draw)

Those of you who rode/ran/walked the Sole Destroyer are eligible for the draw for a lovely CALTEX hamper so please make sure you fill in an entry card with the lovely young lady in the Sole Destroyer T-Shirt.

For those of you who are staying over we have made up braai packs with that lovely farm mutton and Cathcart Butchery’s excellent boerewors.

Remember the bar and the Amatola Spar Take-away stall (they donated all the ingredients) will be open in addition to the Mean Cuisine so you can enjoy a fantastic day with us.

See you there !

Cheers,

John
