Fork steerer

Hi guys

 

So I have finally got around to doing a headset service and I have noticed my steerer has some surface rust on it. I am using a Thomson stem so there is a section of the steerer that is visible, but looks horrible with surface rust ( or whatever it is ). What's the best way to clean it up? If there is a way? See attached picture

Wipe down with some spirits and then a rub down with some fine steel wool
