Hi everyone. I recently got a Kona Hoss new, but the Hayes Sole brakes are completely soft, almost have to depress the brake lever completely to get any braking power. Is this simply because these brakes are dreadful, or is there something I can do to improve their performance? It is terrible to have a great new bike and not be able to ride it fast because I can't stop it fast. Thanks for any ideas!

I had a set of these... Hayes SO1E.... My first set of disks and also my worst. They required constant adjustment (Single piston if I recall) the fixed stop/"piston" needed to be adjusted to compensate for the wear on the pads. Found this out the hard way. One of my pads came out the caliper on the way down Sani Pass  Luckily it wasn't near the top. Happened as we came into the bottom border post. Grabbed a handful and "ting" out she came!

Maybe I just had a rubbish set......

I would bin them and get a set of entry level Shimanos. Even Avids are better than those IMO.
