Hi so I'm looking at putting a RS Sektor RL dual pos coil on my cotic soul. The idea being that it will be a very capable trail bike that can do a bit of XC and a bit of burlier stuff when I chose too. The fork in question seems to be a 120-150mm but apparently there is also a 110-140 which would be the better option (but the pickings are slim and I've got a good deal on the 120-150 and I'm happy with it so long as its not an issue).

The question is what is involved in modifying it or is it simply a setting that I could change. Do I need a space or something perhaps? And is it necessary the Soul is only officially rated to 140. And apparently its a barrel of fun there but the consensus is it isn't rated for 150mm so you shouldn't go there. Is this strictly true will I overstress the frame and potentially cause myself distress in the mid to long term or are they covering their bums due to legal issues and actually I shouldn't be so worried? Supposedly the soul and BFE are perfect for travel adjust since their geometry has been designed with multiple travel options in mind.

What do you guys think. Need to make a decision on this quick since I've got people waiting in the wings.

You'll need a new air spring to lower it, which isn't cheap. I can't see an extra 10mm making a massive difference to the stresses at the head tube though, but that's between you and your dentist. There is often a +-5mm variance in fork travel from what it says on the box anyway.

It's a coil sping, isn't it?

This is what I was thinking. Glad someones at least on my side here.

My bad, not enough coffee. I haven't actually stripped a dual position coil yet, so I actually couldn't say - I do know that with the dual position air spring it's not as simple as just adding a spacer. Coil may well be an easy fix though.

Would the spacer be on the damper side Droo, or on the spring side

Spring side, making the negative spring longer.

Suspension tops out on a negative spring which stops it from topping out with a clunk - this can be either a coil (Fox, Manitou etc) or air (most Rockshox). You'll only top out on a damper a few times before it fails.

I've just put this fork on my Kona coil air, its a really awesome fork for the price. Mine is the 150/120mm option, You can get the spacer kits for them to space it down to 140, I haven't researched it though just read that in the manual somewhere, I can double check tonight when I get home.
