I am new to this - and am in the same position as you - however the above is not really a fair comparison, from a "spec war" the slade wins (air forks, better components), it is however more costly... even the 710 will lose the same war

it largely depends on what you will use it for.... best advice I can give is speak to your LBS, give them your budget and test ride what ever you can get your hands on...

what feels the best within your price range, is the one to get ;)

Thanks!

We are in the market for a 650b/27.5inch medium for around the R12k - R14k mark.

Any other brand/model suggestions in that price range would be appreciated too.

I was in the same boat a few months back, and went for the Giant Talon 1. Very happy so far.

Off the top of my head (those not mentioned), momsen al655/651, titan comp/elite, merida big seven range (XT edition down). You may be able to get a Scott scale 760 for around there as well.

There are of course others, and some of the above may be above your stretch (unless you haggle ;) )

Momsen and silverback seem to offer the best value from what I see.

Once you have a short list, see if you can try a few out, some may just feel "wrong" even set right... An uncomfortable mtb will kill any enthusiasm

Forgot to mention, 2015 bikes are coming out, you should start seeing prices dropping on 2014 ranges in the next 2 months or so...
