HeyYou Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 It's a bit far from Jhb, else I'd be there with my 1989 Daccordi Mitico. Show us a picture of the Dacc? If we can organise (not promising anything, but we'll try) cheap accomm., would you consider coming down????
Loose cog Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I was in PE over the weekend and was reminded of the great roads around the city with wide shoulders perfect for cycling. Amazed at the number of roadies on the roads, including lone ladies. Not often seen in Joey's. There are great B'nB's in the city and we could organise a few trailers to transport bikes from Johannesburg. Guys can either fly (airport is in walking distance to the beach) or share transport. Vic, when does the entries open and close? Vic, Sven, sorry I did not have time to pop in for a chat and see your bikes. Hectic family commitments. See you in Dec.
Loose cog Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 P.S. You will be surprised to see how old your bike is when you actually find out its manufacture date.
Guest notmyname Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Dates. I'll come if I can fit it in with work.
Loose cog Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I recall one year's Herald, I had ordered a new company car which the dealer had promised a delivery date for early Friday morning. With my bike in hand I parked off at the dealer waiting. As fate would have it the new car only arrived late that night. I popped the bike in the car and drove the entire night arriving with just enough time for a quick breakfast before the race. Amazed that the lack of sleep had no effect on my ride although I needed a good nights sleep before the trip back to Johannesburg for work on Monday.
olffie1 Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I think the big picture would be to set some guidelines on paper. We could use for example a three year duration plan for guys to conform to regulations in The Herald Classic Bikes. The first year for example is no carbon components, second year no hidden cables etc etc. These are things that need to be discussed so that we can accommodate interested parties and not exclude them. But a plan has to be instituted to move in the right direction, albiet this being a learning curve for everyone. Also a helpline with appointed people to answer questions on what the requirements are, if a person for example is looking to purchase a steel bike so that they make a good buying decision the first time round.
Loose cog Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Agreed. I don't think that the rules should be to strict as we want to get as many retro bikers riding. We need to do research as hidden aero cabling was already introduced in the early 90's. My missus will ride her C40 which is +-30 years old already but will not like the idea of changing the levers for example. When was the first carbon component introduced? The retro bike movement in SA is starting to take off following the US & European trends from a few years back. There are good bargains to be had. The Herald would also be an excellent event for the SS and fixie guys & girls! ........... just saying.
Loose cog Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Dates. I'll come if I can fit it in with work.It is in February sometime. Heyyou will let us know the details asap.
HeyYou Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Entries are not open yet. The event is normally at the beginning of February, so 2015 is likely to be Sunday 1st February. BUT, we will try to have a display on the Friday, a concourse on the Saturday, followed by a short ride, say 20/30km. And then the main event on the Sunday. BUT, as far as I know, this is still being determined by the organisors, but it's the most likely date. At the last meeting with the race organisor, we decided that we would be INCLUSIVE, rather than EXCLUSIVE. So we would allow anything before 1995, so a C40 would be fine, as would an early LOOK, or TREK. We will rely on you to show us the provenance of your bike. STI /ERGO levers are fine, as are early clipless pedals, LOOK, CINELLI etc. If it works for 2015, we can have various categories for 2016/7/8, 60 years old, 50 years etc etc. But these we will work in as time goes by. Edit: Too many blooming thumbs!!!
Guest notmyname Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 I'm definitely going to try schedule a work trip to P E with a convenient weekend for the ride. I think she will still be rolling as a SS as I'm still saving and looking for that elusive rear der.

hayleyearth Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 This is some good motivation to actually get my dad's old machine finished. He use to clock long miles on those roads in the early 70'ties, and I would love to ride on that there.
