What shock can I get away with?

I have a 2010 Kona Stab Deluxe which runs a Fox Van R shock with 400 x 3.25 coil.

I suspect the coil is a bit light (still not sure) so the obvious solution would be a 450lbs or 500lbs coil. Problem is local suppliers don't have them in 3.25 travel so I'm looking at a 3 month waiting period.

My question is then this:

1. Would I be able to safely (from a parts point of view) run a 3" coil. I realise it will bottom out more easily or bind near end of travel but on a heavier spring that might be negated, no?

2. Would I be able to safely run a 3" shock (a DHX or RS vivid for example) with the same i2i? My layman's understanding says I can't because the rear wheel will still want to go through travel whilst shock has run out. Or could this be negated with manipulating air pressure and spring lbs?

Nico, where are the pics of the bike. I need visual aids to read a thread properly.
