I recently acquired a set of Bontrager Duster rims off thehub and only had a chance to really look at them yesterday only to find out they have a offset spoke bed... What is the reason for that? And how does it affect the rim performance? I intend to lace these up with Novatec hubs (D041SB front, D0342SB rear). Intended use for these rims are XC on my HT. Also, how do I go about calculating the spoke lengths? I have all the hub info, and the rim ERD, I just cant find any info on the rim offset. Thanx in advance
openmind Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 It's so you can run a reduced wheel dish on the back wheel. Maybe the front wheel too if the rotor-side flange is more inboard than the other one.
droo Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 The why - it allows less dishing on the spokes, so more even tension between the spokes on the two sides of the wheel. The how - Damon Rinard's spoke calculator has a field for offset, measure it and plug it in and you're good to go.
