I am cycling from Klapmuts to Hermanus on Monday and as I'm not familiar with the area I'll be going to go down the R44 as the most obvious way. I have also had a trying week and am in no mood for this ****: I'll probably try to kill a wannebe jacker which would have bad consequences either way. In which part did this happen? Here is a pic: 1,2 or 3? Do you know close to which intersection with the R44 it might be?Section 3 is the area to try avoid. But having said that it's no worse than any normal road here in JHB.
LoveMyRide Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Welcome to the Strand. I rode along their yesterday morning at 5:30. There were two groups around that area. I took note of them because I usually don't see that size group so early, and they seemed to start whistling and shouting to each other as though communicating as I rode past. Did not see any BMX though. That spot has been highlighted on the Wannabees website for ages now. Another point regarding some of the responses to your post. All roads leading out of the Strand/Somerset West hold potential for bikejackings/muggings, Including the R44 to Stellies. Lets not even talk about Stellenbosch. My biggest fear on the road between Strand and Gordons Bay are the mothers racing their children to school at almost double the speed limit whilst doing their make-up or checking in on facebook! The return ride in the traffic is often interesting.
Juanhein20 Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 The trails in that area are a problem, remember that famous bike jacking GoPro video......The Trails between Somerset West and Stellenbosch (the Wannabee Trails) are still safe without any incidents and not were that Gopro video was taken. Those guys got hefty sentences 15 and 11 years.It is very upsetting because you cant feel 100% safe riding anywhere alone. If it is not bike jackers it is bad distracted drivers. Safe riding to all during this holiday season.

Was referring to the Sir Lowery's area, especially by the train tracks (W2W section).

Maybe the police will respond if I tell them that a couple of my mates and I will wait for the errant taxi at the ranks in stellies. I know this is not legal but I'm now so gat vol of this k@k.
koukie Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 A taxi in strand also whipped me with a sjambok while driving past me. I did shout (did not swear) at him though for constantly stopping in front of me (redline) to pickup passengers.
