Good day,

If this is up here somewhere, sorry.

I am going down to Hibberdene this weekend for a while. Is there any spots I should not miss out on and some bad spots I should avoid?

advice will be appreciated.

thanks

Going to be in the area from 24th Dec to 5th Jan. If you're riding down there, Oribi Gorge looks like a lekker spot to ride, read some nice reviews about it. Don't know the area personally, but definitely going to go check it out. (roadie and mtb compatible).

I am going to be in Umzumbe from the 20th (5km south of Hibberdene). Not 100% sure if I'll have the mtb with me yet and have only done a couple of rides there to date. One thing is for sure - AVOID the main coastal road. It's a death trap and will be super busy at this time of year. I have yet to consult some of the locals on where they go to ride but I must confess I didn't feel very safe heading inland last time.

I wish there was a cycle lane running along the coast next to the railway line. I would buy a fatbike for that alone and cruise for miiiiles.

Will be in Umzumbe from the new year for 2 weeks. We have a house there and hence go down most holidays. Cycling inland is very safe, have never had any problems all the years I've been riding there. You don't necessarily have to go inland, if you head straight out of Umzumbe, over the highway you will get a dirt road that runs parallel to the highway, head either way on this road and you will have very decent workout. There are a lot of roads, tracks etc heading into the sugar cane fields which are also rideable. Go on strava and look at segment explore for that area, you will see a lot of segments, paths etc that you can replicate. If you down there still in the new year, let me know, would be happy to show you around the area, there's some excellent riding there.

Fun trails at Lake Eland, you get to ride amongst the wildlife. And Clearwaters has great trails and views too, about 45 minutes away, near Port Edward. And the Burry Stander Cycle Park is in Umtentweni, 5-10 minutes from Hibberdene.

Port Shepstone area, about 15min drive South of Hibberdene has a bike park from what I remember with great trails.

I grew up in Hibberdene and used to cycle out to ride every Saturday with the guys there, and even a very young (still on 24" wheels) Burry Stander.   Amazing riding through the cane fields and bush.  In a group it was good.  This was however a good 16 or 17 years ago!

Went with some of the locals into the Umzumbe cane fields on Monday. Awesome ride and scenery with some brutal gradients.
