Somerset West Road Routes

Hi guys an girls,

Going to be on holiday in Somerset west by Sunday, and really hoping to ride as much as possible. Anyone have some road routes that I can take a look at? I assume most of my rides will be solitary so safety is important.

If you have a link to your strava rides that would be awesome, would appreciate being able to see the route on a map!

Thanks in advance!

I do all my riding on my own, and I've had one incident in 18 years.

There are plenty of safe routes to ride on your own. The old favourite is out along the coast road to Rooi Els and beyond. That can be anything from an 80km ride to an out and back 180kms (with a nice headwind going out and a tailwind coming home).

Then there's Franschoek over Helshoogte. Same thing - keep going up Franschoek Pass for added distance, or turn left before Franschoek and head off towards Paarl.

The R44 all the way to Wellington, and then up Bain's Kloof. Something a bit shorter - turn left at the Klapmuts robot to Klein Joostenberg, and then back towards Stellenbosch (90kms).

There is also the Voor Paardeberg/Agter Paarl rolling hills that can keep you entertained for hours. http://www.strava.com/activities/216814248

Places to be careful - Kayemandi, Cloetesville, and I've heard people moaning about the road between strand and Gordon's Bay.

PM me for some more details

I used to do that first second too head down pranschoek pass get over the dam bridge into Grabouw and then down Sir Lowry's back into Somerset gonna be a long day though

Top one for lovery scenery but make sure you don't go too far out on a rare tailwind as you need to get back exposed to the wind
