help with watts. Power shortage.

Background: been cycling for a year now road only and since I started I have lost 10kgs. I now weight 87kgs. I have started power based training on a Wattbike pro at virgin active but my power figures are extremely low. On the 3 min test I get a MMP of 287 and over a 40 min ride I can only hold roughly 168 watts average. From what I see people on the hub talking those figures should be taking me backward. My question is, is this really very low for someone who has been riding for a year and also what is the best kind of training to do to increase power output?
