While I agree with most of what is in the article above, its not the whole picture. Cycling Clubs have always been around, they never went any ware when Track Cycling declined from its peak in the 80's. There are may reasons for the decline of Track, and one of them is that road racing became more structured with Pro's and Teams. The Hero's that youngsters looked up to and wanted to emulate moved from the Willemse's and Engelbrecht's to the Hunters and the Augustein's. The fact that Hunter and most international road sprinters honed their speed on the track got lost in the mean time.

 

Clubs can well increase the quantity of riders on the track, but clubs cant take the good riders to that next level, sending then to all the GP's, and exposing then to international racing.

 

The only way to increase the quality of our track riders, and to get talented riders back to international level is with sponsors and sponsored teams.
