To anyone who has competed in or attended World Masters Track Championships over the last 12 years - you will be familiar with Brian.

Sad news indeed.

Steve Walton sent us this touching account of the funeral of Prolific race organiser Brian Cossavella:

Brian was laid to rest with his Mother and Father on Wednesday 12 March at the cemetary adjacent to the Egglescliffe Parish Church which was packed out with friends, relatives and aquaintances. The following reception at the Pot and Glass itself within sight of the graveyard (typically Brian) was full of stories of him, mainly centering around cycling (in various guises), drinking, weight loss (or gain) and his unfortunate long term support of Newcastle United as a football team.

Throughout the afternoon there was constant talk of some event to keep the memory of this great man alive. Any news will be posted as and when it will be known. As we may have to create a new email database, can anyone who wishes to be kept informed of developments in the meantime please register their interest at info@cyclingmasters.com

Brian died suddenly over the weekend of 1-2 March at his home in Yarm, near Stockton on Tees. He had recently celebrated his 54th birthday and was due to organise the European Master Track Championships later in the year.

Brian was a hugely popular character in the sport and was involved in cycling in a number of roles. He is perhaps best known in recent years for his long-running and highly successful World Track Masters Championships, run at Manchester Velodrome.

We've received many tributes to a man who was recognised as a great character and force for good in the sport. Thank you to everyone who has been in touch. If you have a tribute or memory of Brian that you would like to add, please send it to pressoffice@britishcycling.org.uk

Everyone at British Cycling passes on their condolences to Brian's many friends. He will be sadly missed.
