I need some advice please, I will be staying at Waverley for the next 2xweeks (course for work). I am unfamiliar with the area, annd my mtb is going along. I am restricted with a vehicle, so all training rides will start from where I am going to stay. I would prefer mtb routes as close as possible, but suspect that I will have to settle for road training. How safe is it to train on the road in waverley area with regard to hijackings, and how busy can the roads be with vehicles?

The roads around Waverley will be very busy again from this week on - schools are opening.

Depending how much free time you have to train - the closest mtb trail is in Buffelsdrift out on the Moloto road. The Trailseeker is held there. Probably 20km away from Waverley. There is a short singletrack section also behind Wonderboom Hoër, around 6km long loop... There is also Wolwespruit further east next to the N1 off Rigel Ave. Also Rosemary Hill way out east towards Cullinan.

Stay away from Klapperkop, both mtb and road. Huge chance being attacked...

Road-wise, there are a few possible routes to do. Up and around union buildings (Tom Jenkins, Eastwood), Wonderboom Nek. Anyway, check strava for possible routes. I am no roadie ????

As long as you stick to frequent used roads, you should be safe. Yeah, busy roads keep you from being hijacked, but then there is the traffic...

Personally, I keep on the side of the road (pavement/dirt shoulder) on the mtb.

There is a group that rides laps around Waverley every morning. They do MTb over the weekends. I have heard they are very friendly. Also contact Manyax Cycles (? spelling). They ride on Thursday nights I think.

Its Maniyak. I think the guys doing laps are called Zambezi Cycling Group, I might be mistaken. There was a google group at some point.

Also, try and speak to Bouwer Broers in Voortrekker rd in Gezina.

Best advice for where you will be staying. Both Buffelsdrift and Wolwespruit are within cycling distance and well worth it!

So......i have been relocated to silverton, staying at the travel lodge, seeing some awesome climbs around here, lol. Is there anybody here that rides at CSIR,i see there is a 10km loop, and gues that would make for good training as it is an enclosed area (apparently), and it seems safe. I will be riding in the afternoons,as I did not bring any lights along.(maybe 15:00-17:00 ish)

I am not too sure if the csir is open to people from outside. Being that side, there is Bicycle Company at LynnBridge in Lynnwood Manor and Lynnwood Cyclery further down Lynnwood rd, close to Wilgers Hospital. Both have groups going out, mostly at weekends. Contact them, maybe there is someone to show you around. As always, strava is your friend re routes...

I am checking out strava segments, did a attempt at persequor, and it just didn't feel safe at all, will stop at csir tomorrow, there is a nice loop inside(fenced off),will ask to ride ther, and if they don't allow me,i will stick to the road (buffelsdrift is a bit far to ride out and back before its dark). There is a lekker climb in fakkelstr, going over to lynburn road, riding to CSIR. Did 18km with 250m elevation gain. Will be going home this weekend, and be back on monday,so I am limited to weekday (afternoon) training only.
