Hey all

I am looking at some of the new bikes coming out at Eurobike and I see a few with the new Shimano 3 x 11 groupset

40,30,22 - 11,40

It obviously gives a huge gear range but I wonder the need for it.

Is it the Di2 group set? If so, it has synchro shifting for the front dérailleur, which means it basically shifts itself. All you control is the rear dérailleur. With that setup the 3x11 gives you the widest range with the ease of use of a 1x11. I personally went with the 2x11 setup.

That many gears seems Like marketing overkill. Get off your lazy ass and get stronger.

Although a synchro shift 3x11 is not really 36 gears, but more probably around 20 as they only shift the chainrings cogs at the outer gears. My 2x11 is effectively closer to a 1x14.

I'm on 1x10 and it's more than enough gears.
