My brother in law wants to buy a scalpel. He is 189cm with a inseem of 90cm.

The bike shop says he needs a XL. However. Im 188cm with a inseem of about 90cm aswell. But im on a large.

It works perfectly.

Now i would like to know from people in the know. What size do you ride etc.

Thanks

XL for sure. 641mm top tube, a good reach figure (459mm) which really helps in the handling department. For someone that height, it's a far better fit than the Large which has a 617mm ETT and a reach of only 436mm.

For comparative purposes - my bike has a 640mm top tube and 459mm reach, and I'm 180cm. I'm running a 50mm stem. Perfect fit. Just the right amount of room to move around on the bike, and with the longer stem that the Scalpel comes with (90mm is the shortest available afaik) he should be okay.

Only thing that would eff it up would be if the shop specced it with the 110mm / 120mm stem. That would put a spanner in the works for sure. If that's the case and he can't get them to spec the 90mm, well then he has to go for the large. Though I'd then steer him towards something like the Epic / Anthem etc, where you have options of stem length other than stratospheric.
