Griffin Posted February 26, 2016 Share Like Ray J says... just over a week to go! 8 sleeps! I am starting to mark the routes this weekend so please be on the lookout of you are riding. I am not so keen to get up and personal with your front wheel Weather over the last 2 weeks has alternated between rain and sun... but the last week has been very hot! I will post a weather update closer to the event so that you know if you should be wearing sun cream or gumboots. Sappi is doing some harvesting further into the forests so also please treat all roads as active. You will come of 2nd best if you try challenge a timber truck to a game of chicken. Because of this I may change the liaison stage slightly. This might make it slightly longer but safety first. Please do not try sneak lines or make your own trails! Remember the Howick Classic takes place the next day and parts of the Enduro trails are used in that event too... so come ride again First 50 entrants to the Enduro and firat 50 in the Classic get a free long sleeved T shirt... once off, limited 30th Anniversary Edition. How many events still give you a shirt ?? Better get those entries in ASAP !!
Griffin Posted February 26, 2016 Share Quick reminder that the 2016 Sappi Howick Enduro starts at the Karkloof Farmers Market which is just outside Howick. This is not the same place as Karkloof MTB Trails! Travel out of Howick on the Karkloof Road about 2.5km and the Farmers market is on the right hand side. The Market is very busy so be there early to get a parking.... and to have time to browse the stalls, have a coffee and stock up on yummy Midlands goodies. The market is open from 6am http://www.karklooffarmersmarket.co.za/

Griffin Posted February 27, 2016 Share Hey all Latest update and info : We have had to change the start of Stage 1 and one of the liaison stages in the name of safety. Stage 1 now excludes Gums/Pines and starts at the corner where Gum/Pines exits (those of you who know the trails will understand ). This also means that you dont have to ride all the way to the Firetower to start Stage 1. All Stages have to be done in order... so Stage 1 then Stage 2 then Stage 3. This is so that we can start clearing and remarking for the Classic race the next day as soon as all riders have completed the applicable Stage. The liaison stages from the Farmers Market to S1, S1 finish to S2, S2 finish to S3 and S3 finish to the Farmers Market are all different so please look for and follow the markings. Markings are black arrows on white boards and lime on the road. Please treat all roads as active as there is timber harvesting going on deeper into the forests. The routes do not come close to the harvesting but there is the possibility a truck ignores the road closure. Caution boards have been placed in spots that you need to be aware of.. please ride within your ability Descending riders have right of way! If you are crossing a stage route whilst liaising to the next stage please check left and right before crossing over. CBT (Callans Bike Tech) will be doing refreshment/hydration station at the Firetower. You are welcome to refill your bottles there. Note that supply is limited. We have tried in all cases to place the timing pods in clearly visible spots where you have space to brake and "tap" out. Timing however is your responsibility and if you dont "tap" in or "tap" out then to bad, so sad... no result for you There are 2 tar road crossings... one when you leave after the Farmers Market and the same one when you return. This crossing will be marshaled when you leave and we will stop traffic for this but you need to ALL leave at the same time so that the road can be reopened as soon as you have crossed. Riders lagging behind will have to cross by themselves. Once you have crossed you are welcome to ride at your own pace. When you return after completing Stage 3 you will have to cross yourselves. Please be aware of traffic both at the crossing and vehicles leaving the Farmers Market There will be cut off times to reach S1, S2 and S3. These will be fair and will be communicated to you at riders briefing. The Farmers Market can be very busy so please arrive early to get good parking and be aware of other vehicles at all times. Do not park others in! No private vehicles are allowed into the forest at any time! If you would like to watch the racing there are 2 official spectator points. In both cases you will have to park outside the forests and walk in. See the map below for details. Total distance of the events is now about 27km Again.. a reminder... - NO shuttling. Ever. Never. At all. You WILL be DQ'd and you WILL be prosecuted, banned and named 'n shamed. No mercy. - Ride within your limits. You are never as good as you think you are, Teeth are expensive. - Have a annual membership or a day licence and have your board mounted on your bike or have the day licence available for inspection (Applicable to unofficial practice only)- No helmet, No ride. Simple.- Remember the Enduro runs cross over other trails that are live and active up until race day. Be aware of other riders and courteous at all times- These are the PLANNED Stages....they may change before race day if circumstances change- Track has been cleared but dont expect it clear as a freeway. It will be re-cleared before race day. Some marking gas already taken place so please do not break or remove any bunting, markers, boards or arrows- Please report anything (trail/conditions/illegal rider etc) with as many details as you have directly to info@howickmountainbiking.co.za

Griffin Posted February 28, 2016 Share What time is planned prize giving? We aiming for 12 noon but a lot depends on the number of riders (one of the reasons we doing cut off times). Technically the last rider down might actually have a top 7 position
Griffin Posted February 28, 2016 Share Spent most of today walking (yes.. walking!) Stage 1, 2 and 3. All Stages are now cleared and looking very nice. There is still some additional marking to do on the liaison stages

Griffin Posted February 28, 2016 Share On a less happy note Someone has stolen all the permanent signage at the end of Home Jerome (Home Jerome exits on a grass section nest to the Curries Post Road). This includes all the info signs. If anyone saw anything or has any info on this please contact us urgently at info@howickmountainbiking.co.za
