Is it legal to ride on 'M' roads?

I'm not too concerned about getting hit by a vehicle, I've been cycling the world for ten years through Europe, India, Vietnam and far worse traffic places than SA. My only concern really was legality and also mugging, although I suppose in SA that is prevalent everywhere? Would you say I'm safer taking the N2 to Swaziland or the small R66 road through the mountains? (I will likely be wild camping on the roadside)

The answer lies near the on-ramp when you enter the roads.

If there is a no bicycle sign or a minimum speed limit of 40km/hr , then bicycles are not allowed.

I cycle home along the M5 every single day from the Rondebosch common to the Koeberg interchange. I'll take my chances on the M5 over that so called "bike lane" through Salt River any day. I've passed traffic cops so many times and no issues.

It is not about M road or N road etc

Cyclist are not allowed on the a Freeway and this sign will be at the entrance/exit  to the freeway.
