Shimano pedal rebuild

I have a crank-related noise on my bike, and the LBS has nailed it down to my pedals. They're Shimano 105s (the new ones - 1yr old) and I'm told they're not serviceable. I'm think they are (Google results indicate they are).

I'm thinking just open them up, check for play and repack with grease.

Opinions, advice, caveats? I'm at your mercy, else my bike may end in the ocean.

I have not opened the latest ones but I am sure that they are like the older ones ie cup and cone type bearings.  You need the Shimano collar removal tool and the double socket tool to adjust them properly.  It also takes a lot of time.

In practice the cup and cone races are normally screwed by the time you notice anything amiss so you end up replacing the pedals anyway.  The collar tool is cheap but the double socket costs more than most pedals so in the end replacement is most likely the best option.

As David says the double socket is expensive, I know because I bought one!

I see you are in the Western Cape, If you want you can come round and do it at my place?

BTW there are 2 sizes or rather size combinations google your required sizes and I will check if mine is right.

Barry

The new 105 pedals just use a 17mm to remove the spindle and bearing assembly. I just repacked with grease and will ride it and see what happens. The assembly itself is butter smooth, so not sure what the noise could be.

Then again, the LBS said they're not serviceable, so perhaps I'm even barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks for the offer Barry
