Mtb components and Road bikes

I currently ride an 8 speed cassette with 12-21. I just saw a mtb 11 speed 11-42 cassette in the classifieds and was curious about compatibility with a road bike.

Short version, could one use a mtb rear derailleur and cassette on a road bike?

Hi,

It is possible to run a mtb rear mech and cassette on road bike but you will need same speed shifter.

Furthermore to run 11 speed you would need 11 speed compatible wheelset. Most older wheels are 8,9 or 10 speed.

If you are looking for easier gears perhaps run a triple chainset upfront? Or change to 8 speed mtb rear mech and cassette on rear.

Good luck.

yes not  a problem

Provided the pull ratio of the mtb components is the same as for the road components

You see quite a few tandems running Shimano MTB RDs and cassettes with road shifters - 8-10 speed. I think I read some where that 11 have different pull ratios.  However I doubt that you will find an 8 speed RD that will take a 42 cassette.
