what type of bb is fitted to either bike?

BB30, PF30, BB89 BB386 etc etc

Brand?

Type of bearings

how many hours on each?

Trek: BB  Shimano Ultegra Shell x axle, mm 68 x 118, Splined, Shimano. Hours... not nearly as many as the Focus.

Focus says PF30 on the frame but I think it has an adapter BSA??? not too clued up on BB's etc. Garmin says a shade under 8000km but I noticed it the day I got the Focus, it just wasn't as smooth. I'm sure it was Shimano - I built the bike, I remember having to pay R300??? for the BB when they put the groupset on. Groupset was 105 - assumed it would be 105.

To check the bb, take the chain off the chainring and spin the cranks without the chain. It can also be the rear hub/jocky wheels - spin the cranks backwards with chain on and try and see if you can notice a difference. Wheels and tyres can also make a noticeable difference in smoothness.

I think however that it is the shorter cranks.
