Hollowtech 2 problems...

Hi everyone. New to the forums, but have been browsing for some time.

Please bear with me, a bit of a noob...

I recently bought a new road bike, first time road bike buyer. So I decided to go for (what I assume is) a decent entry level bike and but a Silverback Siablo Comp. Nice shiny new Tiagra 4700 group set. Really nice for the first few rides, do a 40Km race and smooth as butter. Following this the wife gets jealous and decides she needs a bike, so off we go and get her a Trek Lexa SL (I think it was old stock 2014).

Now heres where the concerns start. I decide to just check her setup and make sure the gearing is smooth and get on the rollers and DAMN there's a difference in the feel. Hers feels stiff and responsive compared to mine. So I immediately get on my bike (now 2 months old, maybe 100Km done in total) and notice there's flex in the bottom bracket. I get the bike in the stand and there's noticeable flex. I then move the BB lock ring on the drive side (with one finger) and it turns... Now that concerns me a little, considering it should be tight. I check the flex again and notice that the flex is at the lock ring, not on the crank. By this I mean that when force is applied the silver BB lock ring is moving relative to the frame.

I have read a few stories on the internet and have come across issues of the BB thread being stripped and am rather concerned that this may be the issue. Has anyone experienced this issue before and any thoughts on the matter? If the thread within the frame is stripped what does this mean for a two month old bike?

Thanks for reading my long tale of woe

Hi geoffois, if the bike is only two months old you should take it back to the Lbs you purchased it from, assuming yiu bought it at an Lbs.

They can have a look and see if the BB needs to be tightened or if there is indeed a defect on the frame. You should have a warranty from youre manufacturer on the frame if it is indeed the issue. Have heard/read only good things from Silverback warranty issues here on the hub.

Thanks Ben.

Yes, the bikes going back to them this week. Just a bit frustrated, had a few niggles with them over the past two months since I've bought the two road bikes (never had issues in the past with the mtbs). Just hope this isn't an endless cycle of issues.

Was also wondering if this issue with the hollowtech 2 BB is a common one?
