Vintage Cinelli - just because it says Cinelli does not mean it is Cinelli!

The "CX" mystery. Often on the Bike Hub one gets a classified stating a Cinelli "for sale". On closer inspection the frame turns out not be a Cinelli but one built with Cinelli components........which makes things a little confusing to say the least to the untrained eye.

Okay so, Signor Antonio Taverna of Padova was the frame builder of all frames marked with "CX" for all different bike frame manufacturers between 1982 and 1984 using Cinelli framebuilding components! (Refer to photos attached)

Cinelli verified that these frames were not built by the Cinelli Bicycle Company at all.

Many manufacturers thereafter built frames with Cinelli stamped components making identifying frames difficult once the frame was stripped to refurbish, unless there was panto graphing which made things a lot easier.

I actually have a full lug and tube set to build a frame, the lug set is Cinelli the same as in the images above.

The one difference is the seat clamp lug, it looks like any normal seat lug.

A real vintage Cinelli has its own style lug (image below)

This is what to look for if you buying a vintage, steel Cinelli.

That is absolutely correct Quinton.......the seat clamp lug is your best reference point when purchasing. Many people look at the fork however there were a few variances on this too!
