DS MTB frame with not too much space for water bottle

I recently got myself a Transition Smuggler. Even though the Frame is Large, it's a bit of a mission getting a 750ml bottle into the bottle cage.

Can't say I have tried too many bottles and cages, but I like my Camelbak Podium Big Chill bottles in Lezyne Flow cages, works perfectly on my hard tail and never lost a bottle not to mention that my bottles are still in very good condition after a couple of years. I have also tried the Lezyne Flow SL cages and even though they work OK, it's a bit of a mission to get the bottle loaded.

I was wondering if there was a way to move the cage down by maybe 20mm (there seems to be more than enough space), and with something like the Wolftooth B-RAD 2 adapter it's obviously possibly.

So the questions:

1. Has anyone used the Wolftooth B-RAD 2, and is it work the Price (will cost me over R400 to get it to Gauteng if bought from the local distributor)

2. Are there any similar and worthwhile solutions at a cheaper price

3. Or should I just go for a better side-load bottle cage like a Specialized Zee (not sure how well they work with the Podium bottles, but the LBS where I looked at them some time ago suggested that they don't really go together)

1. I have not, but would LOVE to. Seriously considering one or two of those

2. Not that I know of

3. The Specialized Zee bottle cages are the beez kneez. I use them on several bikes and they perfect. Easy access, never lost a bottle.

Instead of lowering the cage, would it work better if able to twist sideways? Then one of these may work:

https://www.topeak.com/global/en/products/accessories/208-x-15-adapter

They cost about R110 each.

I saw the Topeak X15 adapter, but not sure how well it works, guess it's fine for a road bike but on an MTB I'm not sure. Did a Google and some unhappy customers. I will try a couple of LBS's to hear what they have to say about it.

I modified my current bottle cage a little so that it's not straight with the frame any more, maybe 5 degrees to the right. Cant say that it made any improvement.

Do you use Camelbak Podium bottles on those Zee cages?

Having spent hours and a pretty penny on bottle cages....

My personal fav bottle cage is the Spez Zee.

If you want a cage that sits deep in the frame and holds the bottle reliably, get yourself a KTM Cage. I've tested the KTM against all other cages I could find in any bike shop, apart from being looked at VERY strange by the staff none will sit as low as the KTM.

Which KTM, seems like there are plenty to choose from.

Cyclelab lists two models, Wing and Anyway (which seems clover because it's a sideload but you pick which side and how far it's tilted)

Why not use a piece of flat bar.

Make is little longer and drill new holes. This will give you the space tou need. 10 mm and you wont see it below the bottle

I use the Specialised Zee with the Camelbak bottles, never a hassle. The cages have a natural offset so makes the LH/RH loading even better. On my wife's bike which has bogerall space , Giant Anthem W, I had to modify the cage a bit with a drill so that it sits lower. Beware of the side adaptor things as they also add height from the frame to the equation, you can have the one I bought if you are prepared to pay shipping, never been used b'cos couldn't be used

Oh and if you are a Spez nazi hunter the S can be sandpapered off! But it really is a good piece of kit, does not auto release bottles even in technical section in my experience

Think I will give the Zee a go (already have Spez grips on my bike, so I don't mind the S too much)

All sit very deep. The Wing sits the deepest, about 20mm deeper than the Spez Zee.

If you really have a particular obsession to mount a bottle cage halway into the BB, or halfway up your seat tube, then nothing beats the Mount Skidmore adaptor. Up to the point where I had found the KTM  cage this was my next option. https://mountskidmore.com.au/

That is actually clever and not too expensive.

Just found one from Problem Solvers: http://problemsolversbike.com/products/accessory-mounts/height_adapter_-_mprob83 which is not priced too bad (~10USD)
