Silverback Upgrades

Good morning guys,

About 3 months ago i picked up a secondhand Silverback Spectra Comp 29er. i got it for R4500, still in new condition and had just finished the jb2c. The bike is allready upgraded to tubeless and aftermarket Alexrims DP23 (i know its not the best but its better than the stock wheels). It runs on Shimano Alivio & Altus groupset 3x9. Overall im very happy as it also have a airshock. Im not a mountain biker and got the bike due to not being able to run anymore (runners knee, ITB Syndrome). Im looking to upgrade only the groupset to Shimano Deore M610 2x10. Before i do that i want to know if this is advisable and can i go ahead with it? Getting ready for the Karoo2Coast (my first race). Any feedback apreciated. Not looking to buy a new bike as i will be back doing trail running next year. Also any other advice on upgrading? Regards

Should Be fine just check that your hub can take a 10sp cassette.

I have a 2x10 SLX group set with Deore shifters that I'll be selling soon if you're interested - pop me a pm

Thank you for the feedback. I was told when i had the bike serviced that i need to replace the freewheel hub anytime soon. Im planning on get it replaced with a hub that can take the 10spd cassette.

Shimano 8/9/10/11 spd all fit on the same freebody. You only need to replace it if it is worn. They do wear out, but it is usually just the bearings that needs replacing ( depends on the Hub.)

Thank you Philip. I will look at replacing the bearings as the guy from the bike shop mention same thing. The hub has been clean and regrease as there was water in it. I just just thought of completely replace the freehub.

If the hub needed replacing, what would be a good option? Thinking of getting a better hub myself so any input would be appreciated.

Rapide superlights, Hope Pro4's, and then also Novatech hubs seem to last alright.

Keep in mind that you could always rebuild your hubs onto better rims, so it might be worth spending on them.
