26er vs 29er stand-over height (difference?)

Hi,

When one fits an 18" frame with 26" wheels (26er) in terms of stand-over height (one can stand with both feet flat over the horisontal pipe of an 18" frame with 26" wheels) and upgrading to a 29er would one then have to add the extra 1.5" (larger radius of a 29" wheel) to the equation and in other words go for a 2" smaller frame (16") ?

The "top to bottom" frame size is measured on the frame itself, so my guess is that a n 18" 26er would have a lower stand-over height than a 29er - is this correct?

Thanks,

Reinhard

Not necessarily. The geometry of the bikes (i.e. 26er vs 29er) is usually a bit different so the standover height and BB clearance should be fairly similar for the same frame size even with different wheels as far as I know.

not entirely - there is other factors that change when you go smaller - the top tube is shorter etc

However some frame designs have a s-bend top tube or curved top tube to accommodate you on the same size bike as before.

So theoretically a medium should be a medium and an 18" should be an 18"

the fact that the wheels are bigger and thus increasing the front height is true. That's also why you see so many 29ers with slammed stems with negative angles and flatbars...

generally the bikes have really short headtubes also...
