XT SL-M780 Shifter Cable Fitting

I need to fit a new cable to the front XT Shifter. When the shifter is in lowest setting there seems to be no place to insert the cable. The setting is set to 3x shifting. When shifted to highest point there seems to an opening for the cable but the "head" does not go through to be seated.

 

Is there something that I'm missing?

Did you remove the screw on the side where the cable is fed in through?

 

Its a black plastic screw on the side where the shift levers are...

@S14 Yes. Even if I hold the shifter in the light, there is no light at the end of the "tunnel".

There's a little switch on the bottom of the shifter marked 2/3. Switch it to 3, then downshift.

 

The switch changes the shifter from 2sp mode to 3sp mode by blocking the shifting to the nonexistent 3rd ring, which also stops the end of the cable being able to line up with the cable exit until it's released.
