LOL! The bike licenses meant very little, they were little aluminium disks like dog licenses.

 

Must have been issued by the City, they disappeared before I finished high school in 1984.

 

The whole cycling scene has gone majorly backwards since the late 1980s. When I was at school more than half the kids arrived by bike. Now at Westerford there are never more than 10 or 15 bikes out of 700 or 800 pupils. And the crazy thing is that Rondebosch and Newlands have a proper network of bike lanes separated from the traffic, built n the mid 80s. at least 4 subways under major roads even.

 

But yeah, the cops used to fine kids for faulty brakes etc.

I remember in primary school the traffic cops would pitch up during school time at the bike park and wright fines for the bikes that did not have the license disks, bells, reflectors, etc.  We learnt at a very early age to bin traffic fines.
