road bike tyre width...?

I upgraded my road bike to a merida scultura 5000 disc last year.  Bought it stock standard factory fitted with a full-house shimano ultegra groupset and its been a great bike so far.  Wheelset isn't spectacular and i'm running the same 25mm tyres that were originally fitted.

I've always had something for deep section carbon wheels and thought that one day i'll upgrade the wheelset as the rest of the bike ticks every box on my bicycle wishlist...

Question is, given that I have disc wheels and getting wheels in and out of the frame isn't a problem, should i stick with 25mm or upgrade to perhaps 28 or 32?  And if I go wider, should I consider different rims?  What are the industry trends, are we going to see wider tyres and wider rims on road bikes standard as we have seen with MTB's, or are the wider road wheels a sales gimmick?

road surfaces where I stay aren't great, so i'm thinking that I will enjoy a bit more tyre volume, however I don't want to give up too much efficiency?

I’ve been running 25s for a while now, and if my fame could take 28s I would put them on in a heart beat.

The efficiency loss is debatable and at our level, th extra comfort and confidence that a 28 is more important.

Edit: Try them on the same rims first. See how it goes, then upgrade if need be. But I wouldn’t.
